Connacht   Hurling and Football Residential Academy

The Connacht GAA  Hurling and Football Residential Academy takes place in N.U. I, Galway on June 26th, 27th and 28th.  It is the second year of this initiative and it will compliment the already existing County Schools of Excellence.  Indeed we would envisage that selection of players for the camp will take place through the latter.

The two main objectives of Schools of Excellence should be

a)      Maximize participation at that level; create an environment that makes playing for your county a real and tangible aspiration.

b)      Optimize playing standards; continue to develop player’s potential.

We hope that the addition of our Residential Camp will further satisfy both of the above criteria.

The enclosed programme of events is designed specifically for U-15 and takes into consideration their physiological and psychological stage of development.

This will be a challenging few days for all the players but for those fortunate enough to be selected it promises to be enjoyable and above all educational.

Playing our games should be fun and attractive and this ethos will be espoused throughout the week.  The social interaction of our potentially elite athletes will cultivate relationships that will last throughout their inter-county years and will be mutually beneficial to all.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the mentors and managers who are presently involved with all the schools of excellence in each county and to extend an invitation to you to attend any of the sessions on any day.

In conclusion I would like to thank all the coaches, guest speakers, Tony Regan and Adrian Hassett, NUI, Galway for their excellent facilities and especially John Prenty (Secretary), and Larry Quinn President of the Connacht Council for their generosity and conviction in sponsoring this entire event.

I look forward to working harmoniously with all for the benefit of all

FOCAL o UACHTARAN C.L.G. CHONNACHTA

On behalf of Connacht GAA Council I welcome all the participants to the Connacht   Hurling and Football Academy.  I especially welcome the players selected from the five counties and I hope that these three days of intensive Coaching and Development will be of assistance to you in both your sporting career and personal development.

We are delighted this year to welcome 25 players from the New York GAA Board.  The Council have had an association with New York for many years with the winners of the FBD League travelling to New York for an overseas final each year.

We have also welcomed New York into the Connacht Senior Football Championship for the past nine years.  In addition, our Coaches have delivered many coaching sessions in New York.  The inclusion of our American colleagues is a welcome development in our ongoing relationship.  I am confident that both the players and the mentors will enjoy their time in our company.

This residential Academy is the brain-child of John Tobin, Director of Coaching in Connacht.  We are fortunate in this Province to have someone of John’s ability and experience.  He has consistently come forward with innovative proposals for the delivery of a comprehensive Coaching programme throughout the Province.  Many of his ideas have been incorporated into National Coaching policy.  I am sure that John, together with Damien Coleman, Director of Hurling and John Prenty, Connacht Secretary, will continue to promote best practice in the delivery of Coaching to all who wish to play our games.

We are equally fortunate to have very capable Games Managers operating in each County whose remit is the delivery of the Coaching Plan into all areas of the Province.  I take this opportunity to thank all our full-time coaching staff on their dedication to the cause.

I want to thank Tony Regan and Adrian Hassett of NUI, Galway for the use of the facilities over the three days.  I especially thank the Guest Speakers for making themselves available to assist in the operation of this Academy.

Finally, to the players taking part, I trust that you will learn how to prepare properly for your sporting career and always behave with dignity both on and off the field.  Enjoy these few days and bring back to your team-mates the lessons you have learnt.  I hope that the friendships you create over these few days will continue long after your playing days are over.
